Unique New York

The year is 2017. It’s that time between Christmas and New Year where the air is saturated with a cocktail of residual festive spirit, and the anxiety of realising you’re not ready to begin another year of broken resolutions and underachievement.

Two of my favourite and most unique people in my life finally got to meet. One of my closest friends, Kyra, and my mum met. My mum’s name is Annette, but Kyra took to calling her Nettie.

Kyra didn’t just bring herself. She brought a second Christmas with her. It was a polka dot stocking filled with gifts for me from her and her family, who are also one of my adopted American families.

The next day will be remembered as that time I dragged my mum around Manhattan. Kyra came along for the ride too. We waited outside the theatre of Carole King’s Beautiful for $40 rush tickets. The snow was falling faster than our motivation to be outside. We did, however, survive to purchase tickets.

Then we were off to see the famous charging bull. On the way we stopped by Trinity Church.

We found the bull. The way people were crowded mere inches from the bull, so people couldn’t take a photo was a load of bull. There was a small bollard, which stood the perfect photo taking distance from the statue. The bollard became the starting point of a somewhat orderly line I convinced the tourists of New York to get into. Some people tried to cut the line, but I pointed out the back of the line to them.

Kyra and I took a stand with this heroic figure.

Following our time in the Financial District we headed over to Central Park. I’d never seen Central Park in the snow before. It was even more magical than I’d ever imagined.

A wintry photo shoot took place. For the blog, of course.

Nettie began to whinge about all the walking. Oh well.

We found Alice in a Winter Wonderland.

I’ve visited lots of museums around the world, but my favourite one that I keep going back to is the Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met).

The magnitude of the museum makes it impossible to explore the entire place, so each of us chose a section to visit. The Egyptian exhibit was Kyra’s choice.

Nettie was whinging about being on her feet, so I told her to take a timeout in a tomb.

I chose the Costume Institute. Closed.

Then I chose the American Wing. Closed.

My third choice was European Paintings and Sculptures, which was also closed open! It was actually open.

I admired Degas’ exquisite masterpieces.

They were very inspirational.

Nettie’s chosen section was the cafe. Yes, literally the place patrons purchase food and beverages at an exorbitant price. She was in her element.

We opted for dinner at Gracie’s on 2nd where we found generous portions, and friendly, efficient service.

Then we set off for a truly Beautiful evening.

I was so moved by the musical that I left this review on the show’s Facebook page.
